Founded in 1945, the Philharmonia Orchestra has just celebrated its 50th Anniversary season.

The Orchestra performs an outstanding selection of concerts each year at its London home, The Royal Festival Hall where, from September 1997, it will become joint resident orchestra. The Orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor, Christoph von Dohnányi, is joined for the 1995/6 season by such distinguished conductors as Yevgeny Svetlanov, James Levine, Kurt Sanderling, Myung Whun Chung, Riccardo Muti, Mikhail Pletnev, Leonard Slatkin, Hugh Wolff, Andrew Davis, Christian Thielemenn and Christoph Eschenbach. Touring projects for the 1996/7 season include tours to Italy, Spain, Greece, Japan & the Far East, Switzerland and Germany.

The Philharmonia Orchestra is proud to number some of the finest young soloists in Europe among its principals. Its position as "London's leading orchestra" stems from its vitality, unique warmth of sound, and commitment to commissioning and performing music by leading contemporary composers. Particular acclaim has been given to the early evening series of concerts designed to focus on contemporary music, "Music of Today", directed by the Orchestra's Visiting Composer, James MacMillan.

The Orchestra has just completed its first highly successful year as Resident Orchestra at the Corn Exchange, Bedford, in addition to another successful year at Le Châtelet, Paris where it has been Resident Orchestra since 1994. In 1997 the Philharmonia Orchestra will be adding another high profile international series to its list of activities when it becomes Resident Orchestra at the prestigious Salzburg Festival. The Orchestra also begins its new regional residency at Leicester's De Montfort Hall in 1997.
